Select a style.
What dance style do you find most intriguing? What genre inspires you? While it’s fun to try multiple styles over time, start with the one style that really excites you and makes you want to fully immerse yourself in the movement.
Do your research: go to performances or watch videos online or on social media to familiarize yourself with the hundreds of international dance styles, and decide which style is the best fit for your physical abilities, natural sense of movement, and personal creative expression.
Want to make sure you have the correct footwear for your chosen dance style? If you’re wearing Fuego dance sneakers, you’re all set! Fuego kicks are made for every form of movement – from bachata to bollywood to breakdancing! – so with Fuego on your feet, you’re ready to learn any style your heart desires.
Find the right instruction for you.
The internet is an unlimited resource for dance education, but when you’re just beginning your at-home dance journey, it’s important to do your research and find trustworthy educational resources that will teach you the proper fundamentals from the start.
There are a vast array of online dance courses available that offer properly paced, thorough instruction to help you build your basic skills, then enhance your technique and lean into creativity over time. Slow & steady is usually the best way to learn a new dance style, and a wise instructor will know how to communicate thoroughly and showcase skills in a way that is easy to follow and to review on your own.
Explore a variety of online platforms, research the instructors, and find the best videos for your learning style and level of physical ability.
Warm up!
Just because you can dance in your PJs first thing in the morning doesn’t mean you should: learning at home in a relaxed environment does not mean you can skip the necessary warm up or cool down process!
Before an at-home dance class, make sure to warm up your muscles and get your blood flowing with some low-impact movement (jogging in place, for example). And don’t forget to stretch – your muscles and joints will thank you later!
Dress for success.
Even though you’re not going to a dance studio for class, you may want to change your outfit to ensure you’re able to move freely. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing that is loose enough for movement but not so oversized that your arms or legs can get caught in the material. Breathable fabric blends that stretch are ideal, but you don’t need to wear full-body spandex or a leotard to dance: wear what makes you comfortable!
Also make sure you’re wearing shoes that are supportive and comfortable, like Fuego dance sneakers! Fuego sneakers are engineered for movement, ultra-lightweight, and feature unique design elements like patented FlowTec outsoles for optimized slip + grip and dual pivot points for max spin ability!
Focus on the instruction.
Choose a space at home where you won’t be interrupted or distracted. Clear enough room so you can extend your arms and legs freely and have space to move throughout the room if your dance style requires navigating across the floor.
Set up your computer monitor, tablet, or phone in advance and test the lighting and screen resolution so you can see clearly from the point on the floor where you’ll be anchored for most of the lesson. Check for glare from windows or reflections from mirrors or other surfaces that could be distracting or limit visibility. Also check audio to make sure you can hear the instructor loud and clear. You need to be able to see & hear clearly, move freely, and focus fully, just as you would in a controlled classroom setting.
Practice!
If you really want to master your dance style, you need to put in the work! Even the most naturally gifted professional dancers have to refine their technique outside of rehearsal. It takes discipline and drive to be the best dancer you can be, so put time on your calendar between courses to work on your steps just like you would if you were leaving home for an on-site dance class. Even if your online instructor never sees you, YOU will see and feel the results when you start your next video!
